About the Role:

A Lead Software Engineer leads the technical design and engineering of product areas and features, operating within a development team, but acting as a peer to development team leader, and with leadership and influence beyond their team. Lead Engineers are acknowledged experts and leaders, recognized within their teams for their technical skills and commitment to excellence, and with the ability to build effective relationships and influence outcomes both within and beyond their own team.

Key Responsibilities:

Design – Leads the technical aspects of feature design, collaborating with other design leaders and technical leadership, spiking and prototyping to evaluate design approaches. Continually evolves and communicates designs to ensure effective implementation.

Product Engineering – Leads the engineering of new features, and in particular the implementations of key parts of the design. Demonstrates high degrees of ownership, performs and fosters reviews and other engineering improvement practices.

Engineering Practice – Leads at a team or cross-team level the operational aspects of engineering – the tooling and practices required to provide efficient build, review, coding, and testing to occur during development. Continually fosters and improves the practice of engineering among other engineers and teams.

Diagnosis and Support - Uses deep technical knowledge and experience to lead the diagnosis and resolution of support issues.

Learning and education – Constantly evaluates new technologies and engineering approaches during the design and implementation of new features, or to identify new technology enablers and opportunities for products. Educates and mentors engineers and other roles in the organization to develop skill and awareness.

Product Ownership – Contributes to product ownership by advising on technical and engineering matters and becoming involved in product design from inception through to completion. Collaborates closely with Principal Engineers, Product Architects and Product Ownership to guide and implement long term product and technical strategy.

Experience and Qualifications

Typically, eight or more years of experience as a software engineer, with a track record of technical leadership and engineering excellence within and across teams.

This role is qualified by demonstrated skills and track record, in particular the demonstrated ability to lead and influence the engineering of product feature

Technologies include:  Java, Scala, JavaScript, Big Data (Cassandra, Apache Spark, Elastic Search), AWS and Continuous Integration Tools, SQL and NoSQL databases.

Diagnosis and Troubleshooting – Diagnoses and resolves issues at a product scale.

Design and Architecture – Leads design of product features prior to and during implementation.

Business Acumen – Aligns technical design and implementation with positive business outcomes.

Innovation and Strategy – Lead technical design of features, operating on a 3-6 month horizon.

Leadership and Influence – Technical leader in and across teams. Autonomy and Proactiveness – Independently identifies and resolves customer, engineering and technical issues.

Communication and Relationships – Builds working relationships with key technical and design stakeholders within their group, and with senior engineers across the business. Effective presenter and communicator in technical and design settings.

Coaching and Mentoring – Proactively partners with and mentors engineers in development teams they work in.

Essential Education:  Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Science, Software Engineering or equivalent.
